|Soil type:||Grey sandy loam over yellow clay|
The Craneford vineyard is situated between the Eden Valley township and High Eden sub-region, in a high rainfall and cool part of the Eden Valley region. It is in this area of Eden Valley that produces some the best Rieslings, benefiting from a long, cool growing season, resulting in ample natural acidity and flavour at harvest.
The soils are common grey sandy loams of low pH and low fertility. The Riesling vine is well adapted to this environment and is able to produce the right balance of canopy and crop load.
The vines have a southerly aspect with the rows running east-west. Importantly this greatly reduces the incidence of sun burn and allows even ripening of the fruit on both sides of the vines. This vineyard produces the outstanding Riesling for our Freya wine.
