Eden Valley – The Ultimate Winemakers Playground

Eden Valley… the ultimate winemakers playground.

Prior to the beginnings of Sons of Eden, some 25yrs ago, Corey & Simon toiled in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley, notably with Henschke and Yalumba, triggering an obsession with the region and forever chasing its ultimate expression.

To describe Eden Valley is not simple because frankly its complicated, which in part is the magic of the region. For every generalisation made of the region there is an exception due to its many site specific characteristics.

Located in the higher altitude and cooler eastern half of the Barossa this picturesque region of hills and valleys has a storied multi-generational winemaking history.

On one hand it produces outstanding rieslings, pure and delicate, from its marginal higher altitude sites through to intense but refined shiraz from a myriad of soil types on lower altitude sites and aspects.

Each vineyard site has a signature, influenced by altitude, aspect, soil type, and climate. All are different and the resultant fruit develops a distinct expression. Low yields are a common thread and viticulture can be challenging and is best undertaken by the optimist in pursuit of wine’s equivalent to the holy grail.

Eden Valley represents one half of the Barossa and compared to the adjacent Barossa Valley is markedly cooler leading to harvest dates 4-6 weeks in delay. Long slow ripening contributes to remarkably balanced wines with vibrant and intense flavours and ideal levels of natural acidity. Many vineyards are exposed to the elements and grown on shallow low fertility soil resulting in low yields which further enhances the intensity of characters at harvest.

The diversity in sites accommodates a broad range of varieties that it can produce to a world standard. Our Freya Riesling, single site Cirrus Riesling and the Remus Old Vine Shiraz are consistently profiled as benchmark international styles.

Cabernet sauvignon benefits from long slow ripening with the best examples found on the lower altitude, slightly warmer sections of the Valley.

Sons of Eden sources fruit from eight geographically different vineyard sites throughout Eden Valley of which four it directly manages. Being intimately involved in all facets of the winemaking process from vineyard to bottle ensures we are able to preserve the essence of each vineyard in the final wine.

We are proud to showcase a mixed Eden Valley 6 pack for you to a get a first-hand insight into the region and its magic.

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2020

Sourced from three old vineyards, two of which are dry-grown, our prized Eden Valley old vine shiraz is quintessential cool climate Shiraz. Often showcased as an example of the ultimate expression of shiraz from the region.

The 2020 was awarded 97 points and a Platinum Medal (awarded to only 150 wines from over 16,000 judged) at the most respected international wine show, the Decanter World Wine Awards. This follows the 2019 vintage which was awarded Best in Show at the same show the previous year.Platinum Medal (97pts) – Decanter World Wine Awards 2023“A striking harmony of dried thyme, oregano and mace with sublime aromatic undertones of red fruit and liquorice. Rich and powerful with plenty of fleshy sweet fruit tumbling through to the long spicy finish. A great future ahead.” – Judge’s note

EURUS Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

his wine is made only in exemplary vintages when Eden Valley cabernet sauvignon displays outstanding quality.

Grapes are sourced from two mature vineyards, one in central Eden Valley, the other on a high vantage point close to the western boundary of the valley next to Menglers Hill.

Selected from our best barrels, the wine displays an alluring mix of blackcurrant, violets and spiced-cedar aromas. Palate richness and complexity is balanced with long fine silky tannins.93pts – James Suckling (Ned Goodwin review)
“Black currants, wild berries, crushed herbs, dried currant leaves, cedar and raw coffee beans on the nose. Medium- to full-bodied, with mellow dark fruit and minty, spicy notes. Tannins are creamy and supple with a velvety-textured finish.” Ned Goodwin

STUDIUM Montepulciano Eden Valley 2018

Testament to the versatility of Eden Valley is the production of montepulciano, a late-ripening, thick-skinned variety. Native to the Adriatic coast of Italy and grown on the shallow red soils of Tim Fechner’s Eden Valley (Moculta sub-region) vineyard that in 2018, displayed great balance of flavour, tannin and natural acidity at harvest.

The fruit was hand-picked, destemmed with 10% whole bunch clusters, cold soaked for 5 days and naturally fermented for 20 days. It was then pressed to 500 litre French Puncheon barrels for 12 months of unhindered maturation. Bottled without finings and filtration.

95pts – Wine Orbit (Sam Kim)

“This is perfumed and inviting on the nose showing red plum, warm spice, vanilla and cedar notes, followed by a succulent palate that’s silky and lingering. Beautifully framed by chalky tannins, finishing structured and lingering.” Sam Kim

CIRRUS Single Vineyard Riesling 2020

The vineyard site is 550m above sea level within the High Eden sub-region of Eden Valley. The associated cool climate is ideal for growing riesling with delicate flavours and perfect natural acidity.

With a north-easterly aspect, and protected from the damaging prevailing westerly wind, the vineyard makes use of the gentle morning sunshine in embarking on a long slow ripening period. Free draining, low fertility, shallow sandy soils over weathered granite contribute to small intensely flavoured berries.

A little bottle maturation brings an extra dimension of finesse and balance, achieving the ultimate expression of this site.

94pts – James Halliday (Tyson Stelzer)

“True to the 2020 season, this is a rich and powerful yet high-tensile riesling, launching out ripe and full with baked apple and kaffir lime fruit, morphing through the palate into a honed and tense finish of pure lemon and lime juice. Crystalline acidity unites seamlessly with powder-fine phenolic grip to lay out tension, structure and endurance.” Tyson Stelzer

FREYA Riesling 2023

Fruit is sourced from three vineyard sites; one in High Eden and two within the cold valley on the protected eastern edge of High Eden. All three sites have a significant history of consistenly producing outstanding riesling.

Riesling from the 2023 harvest was exceptional with pristine fruit displaying intense flavours and great natural acidity.

96pts – Decanter (David Sly)

“Like the stern but beautiful Norse goddess this wine is named after, it is formidable: bone dry, stoic and confident. Built around an austere line of sharp citrus, it also has good mineral grip and a pleasing lick of talc at the finish. There’s a concentration of flavours without forcing any element, amplifying the attributes of a superior vintage. Effortless balance is achieved in this powerful wine.” David Sly

PUMPA Cabernet Sauvignon 2022

This wine is crafted to deliver generous varietal flavours of blackberry with palate richness and silky background tannins.

To achieve this, the fruit at harvest must have a level of ripeness only achievable on mature vineyard sites that allow for a long ripening period with the ideal mix of warm days and cool nights. Our Cranes Range vineyard, in central Eden Valley, has five mature cabernet sauvignon blocks all planted to aspects that provide the best chance of achieving the desired intense flavours and ripe tannins.

92pts – James Halliday (Dave Brookes)

“Here, wonderfully varietal and regional flavours of ripe blackberry and black cherry mesh with brown spices, licorice, briar, bay leaf, earth and softly spoken cedary notes. It’s a lovely pure wine, making finely honed, elegant drinking.”  – Dave Brookes
