Celebrating 25 Vintages – with a Remus Old Vine Shiraz vertical

Sons of Eden celebrates 25 vintages

Vintage 2024 marks the 25th vintage for Sons of Eden which is shaping up to be a great one. With Eden Valley Riesling harvested in pristine condition and Barossa Valley Shiraz and Grenache making their way through the winery, the cellar has some breathing room before the reds from Eden Valley reach optimal maturity.

At the turn of the century, Corey and Simon, while working their day jobs in the vineyards and cellars of Eden Valley with Henschke and Yalumba respectively, embarked on growing and making wine as a multi-skilled, two-man team under the name Sons of Eden.

The first vintage, 2000, produced Romulus old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz, Remus old vine Eden Valley Shiraz and Kennedy GSM. Slowly vineyards were added, the wine styles diversified, and their day jobs were abandoned.

The constant has been their steadfast approach of sourcing fruit from outstanding vineyards and crafting wines with personality and provenance in their small batch facility. Control over all facets of the winemaking process, from what happens in the vineyard to the final bottle, has been the foundation in Sons of Eden being able to consistently deliver their unique style.

Classified as a James Halliday 5 red star wine producer since 2012, their defining moment came at the 2022 Decanter World Wine Awards where the Romulus old vine Barossa Valley Shiraz 2019 and Remus old vine Eden Valley Shiraz 2019 were both awarded Best in Show. A great endorsement for shiraz from the valleys of the Barossa and confirmation as Sons of Eden as an international benchmark producer of shiraz.

To help celebrate their 25th vintage they have curated for your enjoyment, a Remus old vine Eden Valley Shiraz 6 pack with five highly decorated back vintage wines, together with the current 2020 release.

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2013

A warmer than average season, combined with below average rainfall through the duration, advanced ripening and reduced yields. The defining feature was the concentration and particularly the dense tannins that we felt over time would become a great asset many years down the track.

“Youthful crimson in colour. An attractive array red current and liquorice characters combine with complex spice aromas. Dense and fleshy red fruits persist with velvety tannins the length of palate. Superb balance and length with a nice blend of primary fruit and tertiary maturation characters. The wine has entered an ideal stage of enjoyment, however with careful cellaring it still has many years ahead (7-10yrs).”

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2014

A wet winter and dry Spring was ideal for setting up the old vines, albeit spring frost did wreak havoc on low lying sites. A hot Dec-Jan spell was broken with a significant and ideally timed rainfall event mid-February at early veraison allowing the old vine Shiraz to ripen without stress and extended the harvest date to mid-April.

“Youthful crimson in colour with some maturity, lifted cedar, wintergreen and complex dried herb aromas indicative of a small percentage of whole bunch fermentation and a cooler Eden Valley vintage. Juicy red currant fruits and hints of mocha combine with silky tannins and great depth of flavour with focus and finesse. This wine is a sleeper, though drinking fantastically now it will continue to develop further complexity over the next decade.” Sons of Eden note March 24

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2015

Winter rains filled the soil profile providing adequate moisture for the duration of the growing season for the old dry grown vines. Ideal ripening conditions through Feb-March period ensured full expression of the fruit at harvest.

“Youthful crimson in colour with some maturity. Brooding dark cherry with hints of white pepper form a complex and attractive bouquet. Juicy red berry fruits and sweet spice build in unison with the background silky tannins. Still a pup the 2015 Remus is showing a beautiful balance of primary and secondary characters, perfect for enjoyment now. Though with careful cellaring this wine will mature further for many more years (8-10yrs).” Sons of Eden note March 24

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2016

Solid winter rainfall and a warmer than average Spring contributed to vigorous canopies and average to above average yields. Well timed rainfall at the beginning of January preceded mild ripening conditions leading to more classic cool climate shiraz characters with the signature old vine concentration.

96pts – James Suckling
95pts – Robert Parker Wine Advocate (Joe Czerwinski review)
95pts – James Halliday (Campbell Mattinson review)
95pts – The Real Review (Ralph Kyte-Powell review)

“Youthful crimson in colour. Complex wild berry, dried herbs and white pepper aromas fill the aroma. The palate is rounded and fleshy in style showing balanced vibrancy and flavour harmony. A textural palate with great line and length. The 2016 Remus displays class and like many 2016 wines is approachable now, however it will enter its best drinking in 5-7 years.”
Sons of Eden note March 24

REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2017

Winter rains were well above average and the moisture continued sporadically except for a dry warmer than average March which was critical in developing sugar and tannin ripeness. The old vines flourished in the cooler seasonal conditions and produced finely structured wines of great length with typical concentration.

“Youthful crimson in colour with some maturity. Vibrant red cherry and red berry character dominate the focused aroma together with hints of lavender and dried herb. The cooler vintage and deft whole bunch fermentation combine to produce a rich tapestry of complexity and intriguing depth of flavour. The 2017 Remus is drinking extremely well now and will mature further for the medium term (7 yrs), gaining further complexity and interest.”
Sons of Eden note March 24
REMUS Old Vine Shiraz 2020

The 2020 vintage was one of the lowest yielding years on record due to poor fruit set in Spring. It produced deeply coloured and flavoursome wines capable of maturing well for many years to come thanks to an extended run of warm days and cool nights in the lead up to harvest.

Platinum Medal (97pts) – Decanter World Wine Awards 2023

“Deep garnet in colour with an alluring complexity of blackberry and red-cherry fruit aromas, with flickerings of forest-herbs and spice. The palate is equally interesting with balanced richness and concentration, finishing with a fresh and focused vibrancy.” Sons of Eden note March 24
