Barossa Old Vine Shiraz benchmarks

Romulus and Remus Old Vine Shiraz were first released in Sons of Eden’s inaugural vintage of 2000. Crafted to represent the best example of old vine Shiraz from Barossa’s two distinct regions; Eden Valley and Barossa Valley, these wines are only released in exemplary years.

The new releases showcase generous fruit concentration expected from vineyards exceeding 50 years of age, while also displaying characters specific to their unique site. Remus displays classic cooler climate Shiraz characters and long silky tannins, while Romulus has a dark red fruit generosity with soft velvety tannins typical of the warmer Barossa Valley.

The old vineyards of the Barossa have passed through generations of growers and represent a unique treasure that forms the foundation of the region.

Grown without irrigation they have truly adapted to their site, consistently producing concentrated and complex wines. Their large root system provide a buffer against extreme conditions and enables the fruit to slowly and evenly ripen throughout the season. Vines are typically low yielding with small berries which contributes to concentrated and complex characters in the wine, together with an extended length of palate and exemplary balance.

These vineyards represent the oldest significant collection of own-rooted shiraz vines in the world. Their genetics date back to the pre-phylloxera vineyards of Europe that were needed to be replanted on American rootstocks, resistant to the soil-borne pest.


Vintage 2021 – near perfect conditions

One of the greatest characteristic of the Barossa is its climatic diversity which is best illustrated by our harvest dates for Shiraz in 2021. We harvested the first parcel of Romulus in the Barossa Valley, Light Pass sub-region, on the 17th February and completed our final pick for Remus deep into Eden Valley on the 7thApril. The 50 days from start to finish helps to explain the Barossa’s ability to produce a range of styles from dense and fleshy full-bodied Shiraz through to refined cool climate expressions.

Useful winter and spring rainfall helped establish normal crop levels and balanced vines which was follow by a mild, dry summer that endured through Autumn.

Great synergy and balance among the ripening indices of flavour, sugar, acidity, tannin and colour was achieved which is a hallmark of a great year. The classic ‘Indian Summer’ was the bookend to a memorable season that will live on gracefully under cork (or screwcap) for a very long time.


REMUS old vine Eden Valley Shiraz 2021

Sourced from three old vine vineyards, all of which are dry grown and managed by Sons of Eden, within the cool, higher altitude Eden Valley.

Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. Selected fermenters had up to 15% whole-bunch clusters added to the destemmed berries. A pre-fermentation cold soak ensured a slow initiation to fermentation, where temperatures were allowed to peak at 27 degrees before being cooled to 20 degrees for the remainder of the fermentation. Hand plunged daily allowed for a gentle extraction and helped to prolong the fermentation. After an extended period on skins the ferments were pressed to 60% new French oak hogsheads. Matured and not racked throughout the 18-month oak-maturation period provided for palate weight and texture.

Sourced from three old vine vineyards, two of which are managed by Sons of Eden, within the distinct sub-regions of the Barossa Valley; Light Pass, Nuriootpa and Menglers Hill.

Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. The fruit was chilled for 5 days before being allowed to naturally warm to start fermentation. Various cap management techniques were used to highlight the unique characters of the individual vineyard parcels. After approximately 20 days on skins the ferments were pressed and transferred to a combination of new (45%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads for 18 months maturation.
