2022 Kennedy Barossa Valley Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre

Deep crimson in colour this wine has vibrant aromas of raspberries that lead to alluring and complex spice and plum characters. The palate displays concentrated red fruit characters together with complementing sweet spice flavours. Soft and velvety tannins persist the length of the palate that finishes with a subtle savoury nuance.

The 22nd release of this particular grenache/shiraz/mourvèdre blend (this year 45/30/25%); from vines up to 90-plus years of age across Trial Hill, Light Pass, Nuriootpa, Seppeltsfield and Vine Vale. And it’s a good ‘un! Bright, perfumed and detailed with super-pure plummy fruit, layers of spice, earth, florals, gingerbread and roasting meat goodness. Driven by a vivid line of lacy acidity and framed with powdery tannin, it seems like it is a good place and will provide great drinking over the medium term.

The 2021 Kennedy Grenache-Shiraz-Mourvèdre is saturated with raspberry pip, spicy capsicum, salted licorice and loads of spice. It’s a fun little wine, with more than a dollop of savory tannin. There is plenty to love about this wine—it’s joyous in a way, a delicious thing.

From the Barossa Valley wine region, Sons of Eden Kennedy 2020 is a savoury, dry and medium-plus-bodied 45% Grenache, 30% Shiraz and 25% Mourvèdre red blend with grapes sourced from vines 20-plus to 90-plus years of age. The wine was so named as a tribute to the legendary Barossa Vignerons who pioneered the planting of the vineyards that exist there to this day. This GSM is plushy on the palate with ripe red berry, dark berry, plum, pepper spice and savoury herb flavours with a long and satisfying finish.

A very savory red with berry, orange-peel and walnut aromas and flavors. Medium body, round and creamy tannins and a spicy finish. Lots going on! Yet, it’s subtle and very drinkable. Drink or hold.

The Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre varieties were all hand harvested and fermented separately. To aid colour, tannin and flavour extraction the three parcels were cold soaked for a short period prior to fermentation. Post ferment the Grenache and Mourvedre vessels were left on skins for an additional 11 days before being pressed straight to large oak puncheons for maturation. These parcels were matured in oak for 12 months with minimal intervention, before being blended, naturally clarified and then bottled.

The KENNEDY is a classic blend of old vine Barossa Valley Grenache, Shiraz and Mourvedre varieties. Named as a tribute to the legendary Barossa Vigneron’s who pioneered the planting of the old treasured vineyards, which the Barossa enjoys today. The Grenache fruit is the ‘soul’ of this blend and is from an exceptionally low yielding 60+ year-old Light Pass Vineyard. Originally planted by the Kennedy Family, with ownership eventually being passed onto the charismatic Leo ‘Joe’ KENNEDY who nurtured the vines for many years, selling his prized fruit to local winemakers.
