2022 VINTAGE

Gold Medal 96pts, Decanter World Wine Awards 2025

An explosion of blackberries, crushed violets, green leafy herbs and plum cake unfurls over the glossy texture and silky tannins with a supple mocha note to end.

97 Points, Wine Orbit (Sam Kim)

The wine features a beautiful balance of delectable fruit flavours and intricate complexity. On the nose, it displays aromas of blackberry, baking spices, violet, cocoa, and fine oak. The palate is powerfully concentrated, offering both richness and elegance, highlighted by a plush texture and refined tannins. It is superbly structured and seamless, leading to a persistent and captivating finish.

96 Points, James Suckling (Ryan Montgomery)

Powerful and brooding aromas of blackberry compote, dark chocolate, black olives, charred spices, stones and dried herbs. The palate is full-bodied with densely packed tannins, a firm, structured mouthfeel and a long finish with a savory, minerally edge. Deep, concentrated and built for the long haul.

95 Points, Halliday (Dave Brookes)

You’re greeted with a thick roll of exuberant blackberry, black cherry and blueberry fruits cut with baking and roasting spices, cedar, citrus blossom, licorice, dark chocolate and tapenade. Spans the gap between traditional and contemporary with a comfortable regional familiarity. Fine, silty tannins and some great sustain on the finish.

95 Points, Vinous (Angus Hughson)

A young stallion with lashings of ripe fruit and attractive detail. It opens with dense aromas of cocoa and blackberry over just a touch of crushed spices and lavish oak. This is seriously sophisticated. The controlled palate is supported by significant tannins, building into a killer finish.

95 Points, The Vintage Journal (Andrew Caillard MW & Ken Garrett)

Deep colour. Ripe blackberry, salted liquorice aromas with malty notes. Richly concentrated blackberry cedar spice flavours, plentiful grippy tannins and well-balanced mocha, malty notes. Chocolaty at the finish with some chinotto notes. Sweet and savoury wine with very good vinosity and mineral length.

94 Points, Decanter (David Sly)

Powerful body, powerful nose, yet the elements are all in check to show big, ripe Barossa fruit at its boldest, without any chubby fat hanging over the belt. Purple fruits and violets colour a strong entrance, but then the mid-palate expands to also show come crunchy red fruits, aided by lively tannins and a firm acid seam. Big, generous flavours persist without losing their shape or definition, until biting oak and tannin draw the curtain for a neat conclusion. It will live long and soften its tone after time in the cellar.

98 Points, Wine Orbit (Sam Kim)

The captivating bouquet shows dark fruit intensity, floral, toasted spice, game and fine oak aromas, leading to an impressively concentrated palate offering multi-layered mouthfeel, wonderfully structured by silky texture and layers of supple tannins. Energetic and luxurious with refinement and structure, finishing seamless and persistent.

96 Points, James Suckling (Ryan Montgomery)

A wonderful depth of flavor, with aromas of blood plums, dark cherries, sarsaparilla, olive tapenade, violets and ferric earth. The palate is full-bodied with finely integrated tannins and bright acidity, giving intense notes of sarsaparilla, wild blackberries, sweet spices and mulberries. Structured and generous with an underlying freshness.

95 Points, Halliday (Dave Brookes)

Bright red and dark plummy fruits cut with exotic spice, violet and jasmine top notes, licorice, dark chocolate and Barossa earth. Detail and line are recurring themes in the SoE wines; nothing overblown or over the top, just pure, spicy fruit, a graceful passage across the palate and a distinct regional thumbprint. It’s drinking nicely now but will improve with careful cellaring.

95 Points, The Vintage Journal (Andrew Caillard MW & Andrea Pritzker MW)

Deep crimson. Opens with an array of blueberry, mulberry, blackberry along with hints of toast, vanilla and savoury earth. Plush, full-bodied and well balanced with a slightly ferrous backbone of fine tannins. Layers of savoury flavours unfold alongside the medley of forest fruits. Excellent intensity and concentration, all tightly in.

A deeply coloured shiraz from old vines in the Light Pass and Menglers Hill subregions, destemmed and matured in French oak (45% new) for 18 months. Blackberry, satsuma plum and red cherry fruit notes mesh with an array of fine spices and hints of pressed flowers, licorice, dark chocolate and earth. Lovely balance and fruit purity, with the pull of gentle sandy tannin and plenty of drive from the bright acidity. A great contemporary Barossa shiraz.

Hand harvested, destemmed and crushed into small 1.5 tonne open-top fermenters. The fruit was chilled for 5 days before being allowed to naturally warm to start fermentation. Various cap management techniques were used to highlight the unique characters of the individual vineyard parcels. After approximately 20 days on skins the ferments were pressed and transferred to a combination of new (45%) and seasoned French oak hogsheads. Matured for 18 months in oak without racking, the wines were then carefully blended, naturally clarified and bottled without filtration.

To qualify for the Romulus blend the vineyards need to over 50 years of age and managed sustainably.
A story that has intrigued us for years is the fable of the legendary founders of Ancient Rome, Romulus and Remus. These twins were abandoned at birth and reared by a she-wolf. Romulus murdered his twin in a fit of rage over the naming of Rome, the city which both had built. Legend presents Romulus as the stronger, more powerful of the brothers, while Remus was more refined, focussed and elegant. We believe the twins’ characterise the distinctive and unique flavours and attributes of Shiraz from the twin valleys – the Barossa Valley and Eden Valley.
